Camp Hope Ministries
Looking for effective youth ministry that teaches scripture and leadership? Do you want to reach the neighborhood?
Camp Hope Day Camp Ministry is a 20-year old proven success.
Interested?
With no exaggeration and deep humility, every summer God uses Camp Hope to impact the lives of children and youth across the country. Your congregation can host this effective ministry too. We are ready to help you make that happen and offer a start-up discount for first-year congregations. In addition, there are training grants available for congregations that want to use Camp Hope to reach their ethnic neighbors.
This congregationally-hosted neighborhood day camp grows Biblically literate children and youth. Camp Hope is normally three weeks long, contracts with high school and college-age trained youth as staff who are mentored by congregational leaders and supported by a congregation's Camp Hope Ministry Team and a professional Camp Hope Coach.
To learn more, check out our new (and still developing) website at camphopeministries.org and contact Peggy Hahn as soon as possible. Now is the time to get ready for next summer. The deadline for new congregations is February 1. so please contact us today so we can help you asses if Camp Hope is right for you. Feel free to talk with some of our Camp Hope host congregations to get their perspective. 2010 Gulf Coast Synod Camp Hope congregations included: Kinsmen/Houston, New Hope/Missouri City, Messiah/Cypress, Holy Comforter/Kingwood, St John/Bellville, Christ the King/Kenner, Christ/Lake Jackson, Our Saviour's/College Station and St. Paul's/Baytown.

The Value of Lutheran Higher Education lutherancolleges.org

Our collective goal is to engage and support high school students in their college search.
The men and women who graduate from our Lutheran colleges and universities are disproportionately involved in our church communities, from lay leadership at the congregational level to positions of prominence in the larger church. This is in part because their faith and commitment have been nurtured through four years of college.
We want to continue to enroll Lutheran students at our colleges and universities. Your help at the congregational level is crucial. Here are five easy ideas you can implement this year to help us achieve this goal:
Visit our website for more information, and please consider forwarding this email to a friend or colleague who might want to help a high school student connect with our Lutheran colleges and universities!

Try this at home!
Make space - experience Advent! Take a deep breath and commit right now to make space in your holiday season for your faith life.
This doesn't need to feel like one more thing to do - rather - like a relief. I'm not kidding. When families push pause on the pressures bearing down on them to make time for what matters most - following Jesus and spending time with each other - they are never sorry.
We have made this easy for you. Check out the free resources on gulfcoastsynod.org called Faith Together. Sure, it's better if your congregation is doing this together on Sunday morning but that may not happen for all kinds of reasons so take the lead in your own family. You can print out the prayer sheets that will help you pray together - regardless of whether your children are small or you live alone. Use the Heart Cards for your daily devotion. Or just use whatever part of this resource that makes sense in your life.
Our love-hate relationship with the holidays is something we can manage. Turn your kitchen table into your family altar. Does that sound weird? It did the first few times I asked my children to do something besides homework and eating together at the table, but the prayer life we started then has shaped our whole life, so it has been worth feeling uncomfortable at the beginning.
Let me know how this goes - I would love to hear if the resources are helpful. Either way, you will enjoy the holidays a lot more if you can connect to each other and your faith - seriously, that's the point, right?

The Realities of Bullying
Bullying no longer happens only on the playground or in the hallways of schools, but follows kids home through their cell phones and computers. Some research has found that nearly 1/3 of all youth have had rumors spread about them online or via text.
Good news: research also tells us that it is possible to reduce bullying (by 50% or more) if we pay attention, educate ourselves and our kids, and take action. Helpful websites:

Advocating for Children...
Action Requested
Did you know that children brought to the United States by undocumented parents are given an education until they graduate high school, but then have no access to becoming legal citizens?
Almost a million young people find themselves caught in legal limbo when they turn 18 -- they can't get a driver's license, get into most colleges, or legally work in the only country they know as home.
The Senate is getting ready to vote on the DREAM Act, an important bill that would allow these students a chance to apply for citizenship after they complete two years of college or military service -- giving them a chance at a whole new future.
It is going to be a tough vote, and we need to let our senators know that we want them to vote YES. We are not a country that allows innocent children to be punished for the rest of their lives for the actions of their parents.
To take action on this issue, click here to send a message to your senator.
Please act on this opportunity to make a difference for children.
