The Village Education Program
Our synod’s commitment — $15,000
In conjunction with local parents associations, the CAR Lutheran Church operates twenty village schools where no government schools have been built. In 2010, these primary schools included over 4200 children of all faiths. $25 pays for one year of schooling for one child. Our Global Gift goal is for operating expenses. In addition, the villagers are hoping for permanent school buildings. If we reach our goal, additional funds will be given toward the permanent school fund.
During the past few decades the quality of education in the Central African Republic has slowly deteriorated due to lack of government funds and political instability. The literacy rate is formally quoted as 42-45% and now estimated to be as low as 13-15%.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Central African Republic began addressing the declining literacy levels and lack of village schools in 1998 when it created an education committee to asses and make recommendations. In 2001 five village schools were created and are under the control of the Village Education Committee.
Today there is an established, approved school curriculum. In 2007 the total enrollment was 3,500 students in 65 classes in 20 village schools. Parent associations and training for teachers are also provided.
A French language lesson is in progress at the Lokoti Yaleweh Villlage School.
