| Patrick Keen was born in Chicago IL., outside of the Maxwell Street shopping district known as "Jewtown." It was common to see live performance of Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy reed and others on the corner of Maxwell and Halsted. "My family was a musical family so I was naturally drawn into music. Gospel musicians such as Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cook and James Cleveland would often appear in programs at my church. This exposure and influences helped to shape who I was to become. In high school, my music teacher was Gloria Lewis, the sister of Jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis and Delano Obanion of Fisk University fame.I was the first director of Habitat for Humanity in Chicago and worked with President Jimmy Carter and Oprah Winfrey on two different projects. I entered seminary and obtained a Masters and Doctor of Divinity degree and am currently serving as a pastor in New Orleans [Bethlehem Lutheran Church]. My congregation is located in a high crime district as New Orleans has been identified as the most violent city in the United States. I lead the city in a violent crime reduction initiative. We have hosted over three thousand volunteers post Hurricane Katrina. We have developed an appliance ministry and have provided over 250 appliances to families moving back into their homes, many who are first responders." |
